LED LIGHT THERAPY: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Light-emitting diode (LED) light therapy (or phototherapy) works in tandem with other treatments and products to enhance certain results from a cellular level. It’s painless and non-invasive with no downtime or redness. You can expect an immediate glow after one session, but multiple sessions will lead to greater results over time.

LED light therapy is included in each Lunar Glow Facial. Keep reading to learn about the whats and hows.

Shedding light

LED lights do not contain any UV rays. Think of it as a high-tech facial booster meant to help smooth fine lines, fade hyperpigmentation, reduce inflammation and fight acne. It works by emitting infrared lights (causing heat) in different wavelengths that penetrate the top layer of skin and deep into the dermis (where collagen, elastin and other essential proteins reside), triggering natural intracellular reactions. Different colored lights have different targeted benefits, the most common being red, blue, amber and green.

Fun fact: LED light therapy was actually first developed by NASA decades ago to help plant growth in space, then Navy SEALs started using it in the 90s to speed wound healing.

Color-coded

Red: Ever been in an infrared sauna? Red light therapy promotes circulation and stimulates collagen production. Penetrating deep into the dermis layer, this is ideal for healthy aging and targeting fine lines and wrinkles.

Blue: Blue light therapy affects the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. It works to kill acne-causing bacteria, control sebum regulation and soothe the skin.

Amber/Yellow: Amber/yellow light therapy is known for rejuvenating skin cells, targeting pigmentation and boosting lymphatic flow. If you’re targeting photodamage or hyperpigmentation, this one’s for you.

Green: Green light therapy is similar to amber as it works to reduce hyperpigmentation. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm redness.

Who can receive LED light therapy?

That’s the best news – any skin type can benefit from this treatment. Different colors target different concerns, so we’ll work together during your skin consultation to pick a color based on your specific skin goals. For example, if your skin is acne-prone, we’ll want to go for blue, or if your concern is aging skin, we’ll opt for red.

If you’re using Accutane or retinoids, your skin may be extra photosensitive and have a reaction, so let’s proceed with caution here. To all my pregnant friends, I recommend connecting with your doctor before receiving this treatment.
